Artist's Description

On several visits to a local zoo, I was always intrigued by the large, "strange-looking" bird they had. On my last trip, I snapped some good photos and it just looked like it would be a lot of fun to do a drawing of it. Actually, I decided to do two of them with the help of different shots I took of the same bird. Anyway, these large, strange-looking, flightless birds are actually cassowaries. They are approximately ostrich-sized and are probably much happier living in their native habitat which is the rain forests of New Guinea and parts of Australia, than a zoo in rural Maryland. I also found out that they are rather solitary creatures, despite the fact that I did two of them together. Because they are not extinct, I assume there has to be two in the same place at the same time at least sometimes!

With great joy and encouragement from my family, art began to play a significant role in my life once again. This time around, I began to explore color, with pastels and colored pencils becoming favorite mediums. ...
