This piece was done from a small black and white photo of my grandparents, Max and Celia, in front of the meat market/grocery store they owned in Washington, D.C. in the 40's-50's. My maiden name on their sign is actually spelled wrong (should be an "h" at the end not a "k"), but the sign maker gave them a discount instead of redoing it. After much thought, I decided to keep it the way it was. Wanting a sepia look, this was originally done using only light umber, dark umber, cream and eggshell colored pencils, but I decided it needed some "colorizing' much like they used to do with sepia photos. PanPastels worked just fine for that job!
My love of art dates back to childhood. As a child and teen, I never went anywhere without my bag of "drawing stuff" -- pencils, pens, charcoal, paper and magazines for reference photos. I took all the art classes I could in school. However, as often happens, the demands of family and life took over and, unfortunately, I found very little time to devote to it for many years. It was never far from my mind, though. Ultimately, I reached the point several years ago where I could not exist another day without art in my life. With great joy and encouragement from my family, art began to play a significant role in my life once again. This time around, I began to explore color, with pastels and colored pencils becoming favorite mediums. ...
